BiB is an encounter organized by and for European
students. Around
100 people from different countries meet during 9
days to exchange
views, experiences and cultural facts related to
environmental
problems and establish links that cross
geographic and historical
frontiers.

Food: An Environmental Perspective
Production and consumption of food is the
foundation of everyday life
of man and has a fundamental impact on
environment and society. The
ever increasing trend to globalization is now
being strongly felt
throughout the food industry and we have
consequently chosen this
year to focus on this important subject. We will
examine the
different processes and practices related to the
food chain from
small to large scale production in order to
evaluate their relative
strengths and weaknesses. Evidently, it is
essential to take into
account the economic and financial, social and
political contexts in
order to derive a basis for successful and
sustainable development.

The approach will be to analyze the different
stages of the life
cycle of some specific products from production,
processing of
primary products, transportation, packaging,
distribution through to
the sale and finally the processing and disposal
of waste. Attention
will be given not only to the theoretical but
especially to the
practical aspects and implications. Recognized
experts including
university professors, scientists and
representatives of the food
industry as well as political representatives of
the United Nations
will share their views and opinions.

The diversity of the Swiss culture and its
geography; the Jura, the
Plateau and the Alps, are fundamental
characteristics of Switzerland
which we plan to share with our European friends.
We will visit five
cantons, taking the opportunity each time to
focus on a particular
theme. The problem of world food will be
addressed in Geneva, that of
processing of waste in Neuchatel (Jura),
distribution and
transportation in the Alps (Grisons) and finally
to conclude the
synthesis of the week's event will be reviewed
and conclusions drawn
at the University of Zurich.
