CULTURAL TOUR TO EASTERN BLACK SEA, JUNE 24 - JULY 1, 2006 ANATOLIAN ARTISANS
CULTURAL TOUR TO EASTERN BLACK SEA

(7 Nights / 8 Days)

As part of its mission to raise awareness about
the arts and culture
of Turkey, Anatolian Artisans is happy to
announce its first
cultural tour to Turkey, in June 2006. We hope
you will join us for
a unique experience as we explore the
breathtaking nature and
diverse culture of the Eastern Black Sea region.

We are partnering with Fest Travel agency for
this tailor made tour.
Its founder Faruk Pekin, who is considered the
father of cultural
tourism in Turkey, will be escorting the group.
A representative of
Anatolian Artisans will also travel with the
group.

Participants will encounter a fascinating mix of
tradition, history,
architecture and natural beauty. The Hittites,
Miletians, Phrygians
and, according to Homer, women warriors the
Amazons all colonized
parts of the coast. Alexander the Great in his
world conquest also
brought the region under his sovereignty.
Eventually, it was
incorporated into the Roman and Byzantine
Empires. The 15th century
saw the greater part of the area come under the
Ottoman rule of
Sultan Mehmet II.

We start at Trabzon's history filled cobblestone
streets. The city
is said to be founded in the 7th century BC by
Miletan colonists.
Alexis Comnenes founded the Comnenos Empire,
lasting until 1461 when
the Ottomans took over the area. The city is now
an important port
of trade, continuing the role it has held
throughout the history.
Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent was born here
and Yavuz Sultan
Selim, another Ottoman sultan, was the regional
governor of Trabzon
when he was a prince.

We visit the monastery of Sumela, which perches
precariously on the
face of a vertical cliff. On top a mountain
plateau are groups of
wooden summer houses.  Isolated villages on the
shores of a mountain
lake and beautiful frescoes in old abandoned
Greek churches, and
endless mountains, meadows and forests of
evergreen trees in
Çamlihemþin and  Uzungöl, the lost and forgotten
medieval Georgian
churches of Artvin and Twin Minaret Medrese, the
Grand Mosque, and
colorful markets of Erzurum.

These are only a few examples of what can be
found and experienced
in Turkey's Black Sea region, a territory full
of lush green rain
forests, snow-topped mountains, and almost a
thousand miles of rough
coastline.

Please plan to join us for this spectacular
trip!
