Dear Friends, Youth Forum EYE is inviting you to take part in 10 camps that we are organizing this year in Macedonia. We would like to presend tou some more information about our organization, our partners and Macedonia in this small info sheet. Youth Forum EYE is organization formed in 2001 by young people and it is with main aim of assisting in development of our society and bringing positive social and economical changes. The majority of the activities promoted by Youth Forum EYE refer to three main areas:· The sphere of non-formal education for young people through inter-cultural learning and international youth mobility's activities; · The sectors of youth exchanges and national European and international voluntary youth service · The development of consciousness of European citizenship and dimension through programs and projects developed for the empowerment of young people we are working as officila info contact point for the European Commission YOUTH program in Macedonia from September 2005. Till now we have organized working camp in Macedonia and also send Macedonians on working camps abroad. For Youth Forum EYE you can see more on www.youthforumeye.org.mk MACEDONIA Macedonia is located in the center of the Balkan peninsula and belongs to the group of so called South East Europe Countries. It’s neighboring countries are Albania (West), Greece (South), Bulgaria (East), and Serbia and Montenegro (North). Although Macedonia is a young state which became independent in 1991, its roots run deep in the history. The name "Macedonia" is in fact one of the oldest surviving name of a country in the continent of Europe. Ancient Macedonia was located north of ancient Greece, east of Illyria, and west of Thrace. The Macedonians are a distinct nation, ethnically, linguistically, and culturally different from their neighbors.Alexander III of Macedonia - also known as Alexander the Great is the most renowned figure of the ancient Macedonia. His talent for military strategies spread the Ancient Macedonian Empire between Europe, Egypt and India. The symbol to the left is the symbol that was on the shields of the brave Phalanx – his military. Today this symbol is the most celebrated one in Macedonia. Mother Teresa was born in Skopje, the capital of Macedonia. In 2003 she was proclaimed to be a Saint by the Pope in Vatican.The Millennium Cross, build in honor of 2000 years of Christianity, is the new symbol of Skopje. It is nearly 80 meters tall and more then 20 meters wide. There is three beaches larges and most visit form all towns of Macedonia and out of the country. There are auto-camp AS, Euro-hotel and Ezerski Lozja. WORK: The working camp is to equip the three beaches with new garbage beg and to reconstruct the old ones, to make new signs and mark the road with it, reconstruct the old ones and clean the Beach of Ohrid Lake. The work will be on Beach of Ohrid Lake and in area of AS Kamp, Euro Hotel and Ezerski Lozja. The local population will help during all these actions. ACCOMMODATION: Accommodation it will be rented house in Ezerski Lozja all of participant will have common room, kitchen and bath. The house is near beach just on 100metars.The national evening also is organized in the house. But it will be ok if all of the participants bring sleeping begs. And if some of the participant want to bring some products for national evening for preparation of traditional food from your country it will be good. LOCATION: The Ohrid Lake and the town of Ohrid were declared in 1980 a World Cultural Heritage and as such were placed under protection of UNESCO. Ezerski lozja is tourist place is 2Km far from the town of Struga, by the beach of Ohrid Lake. It is nearby the biggest hotel in region of Struga “Euro Hotel”. Also there is a big auto-camp near by Ezerski lozja, called “AS”. All these places have own beaches. During the summer these three beaches and tourist places are visit from lot of tourists. The camp AS and Euro hotel have sport fields for: football, basketball, tennis and more other sport activities. As kamp is famous for it’s live happenings - “Concerts”. Many DJ and bands from Macedonia and allover the World participate on these concerts. You can find a lot of fun here. One of the oldest cities in Europe, the place of 365 churches and furthers of The great King Samoil. Visit to Struga, the city of Poetry and one of the most popular places for tourists in Macedonia. THANK YOU for your support! STRUGA 2YFEYE 15/07-28/07 VOL 12The camp is located in the town Struga which is full of historical monuments, church and monastery from the 16th century. The town Struga is famous from whit that every year is have Poetry Evenings on international level. WORK: Work actions are on two biggest beaches in town Struga “Maška” and “enska” beaches. The actions will be to raise awareness for clean environment. Project involves people from the local community from different age who they will cooperate with work camps for the ECO action. The coast of Lake Ohrid has been settled since the prehistoric times. The oldest archeological settlements date back to the period of Neolithic, around 6000 BC. Only on the Macedonian side of the basin more than 170 archeological sites has been discovered. Due to such distinctive features, the Ohrid Lake and the town of Ohrid were declared in 1980 a World Cultural Heritage and as such were placed under protection of UNESCO. The aim is to have fun together, learn more about each other's cultures and set a good basis for future activities while helping the people on ECO question and to created new ideas for project and intercultural learning. We will do cleaning next to the beaches and as well underwater cleaning of the lake Ohrid. For this we will use snorkeling equipment. ACCOMMODATION: Accommodation it will be in scout centre where the volunteers will have common kitchen and bathroom. They will be 4 or 5 people in one room. In centre we will be organizing nationality evening so the volunteers it will be good if they bring some product from them country for preparing some traditional food. LOCATION: The camp will be in the town Struga, which is located southwest part of Macedonia not far of the town Ohrid on the beginning of the river “Crni Drim” .Struga has been found by many to be truly an adorable place, one that people fall in love with at the first sight. It’s city of poetry, culture, history and a long tradition. The main event of the cultural life in Struga is the world's largest poetry gathering, Struga Poetry Evenings, attended every year by at least 200 renowned guests from the whole world. The festival inter alia bestows Golden Wreath, the highest award for one's overall poetry work and Braća Miladinovci, an award conferred on the best Macedonian-language book of poetry. Symposium is held and "Struga" magazine is published during the festival. The Festival is held every third week of August. Every year on January 13-14 a masked carnival is held in the village of Vevchani to the north of Struga. The spirit of Struga is tender. Located on the shores of Lake Ohrid, the city is laced with bridges, dotted with delightful architecture, and linked by lanes. CHURCH OF ST. GEORGE was built in 1835 over a much older church from the 16th century; the small church of St. George stands in the centre of Struga. LEISURE TIME: There will be a possibility to play different sports and also to dive, go to clubs and etc. There is a variety of possibilities for the volunteers to use their leisure time. THANK YOU for your support! ILINDEN 3YFEYE: 28/07-10/08 VOL 12 Krusevo is a small but picturesque town. It resembles a magic painting by an old master. Situated at an altitude of 1350m, Krusevo is the highest town in the Balkans. The chance guest will not be wrong if they style Krusevo as a museum of old architecture. The town is full of old and more recent houses built in the style of old Macedonian architecture. WORK: The camp it’s in town of Krusevo it will be to clean the forest, walking road, garbage beg and national monuments. This period is full of tourists from every town of Macedonia and from other country’s. Each year on 2 august is Ilinden day, the town wears a festival look. On the balconies and at the windows of all the houses shaggy hand woven blankets (jambolii) in all kinds of colors are exhibited. Krusevo proudly preserves the memory of the renowned Ilinden Uprising of the Macedonian people on 2nd August, 1903. In this town, the Ilinden insurrectionists established the Krusevo Republic which only ten days later was suppressed in blood by the Turks. In this project there are involve people from Krusevo from different age with who they will talk and exchange opinion. With this project also participant will have opportunity to see part of Macedonian history and to learn about the cultural of Macedonia and tradition. ACCOMMODATION: The participant will sleep in tents in the forest near the town Krusevo. The preparation food will be by the tents one improvised kitchen. From the participant is necessary to bring own sleeping beg and mosquito cream. LOCATION: Kruševo is a very unique, small city settled on the Bušava mountain high above the nearest the town Prilep (in the Pelagonija valley). Its 32 kilometers away from Prilep, while from the capital Skopje, is 159 km away. It lies of an altitude of 1,250 meters above the sea level and is the highest city not only in Macedonia, but in the Balkan Peninsula. Today Kruševo has around 9,821 citizens and it represents a tourist’s center. But one century ago, Kruševo had a population of more than 14,000 citizens mostly Macedonians and Vlachs. But every corner telling us own history. THANK YOU for your support! SAILING 4YFEYE 28/07–08/08 VOL 8 The sailing starts from the beach of Struga along Ohrid Lake. The Ohrid Lake has a lot of beaches which are visited by many people from different regions of Macedonia. WORK: Sailing along the coast, we will stop at every beach to clean it from the dirt brought ashore by the waves during the night. Since this project will be implemented during the summer season, it is likely that tourists leave garbage behind them, so this is the reason why we believe that our actions will be necessary to solve this problem. We will also clean the parks which are located near these beaches. While this is a gain for the local community, the gain for the participants will be that they will be taught how to sail. They will also spend a great time with their friends while they are on the sailing boat.ACCOMMODATION: The participants will spend the nights in Struga, in a flat near the town centre. They should bring sleeping bags with them. The participants will have their meals in the flat, except for the lunch, which will be prepared in the flat and will be brought along to the beach where the action is conduct. If LEISURE TIME: in their free time, the participants will have the opportunity to go for a swim, to play beach-volleyball, water polo etc. There will also be an organized visit to the significant monuments of the city, as well as the beautiful ancient churches in the rocks. Around the Lake 5YFEYE I 14/07 - 25/07 VOL 10Around the lake 6YFEYE II 09/08 - 21/08 VOL 10 WORK: The ECO activities are to motivate the local community and to give ideas for future plans how to make this world and society clearer and better for the next generation, Also to cooperate with the people of the region and other citizens from other towns and other countries, where the young people with different age will be involved, with different cultures and from different country. More of the activities are planed to be near ground protected by UNESKO and some of them in places of UNESKO. In every action the people from the region will be involved. And together they will react on the place where it will be dayside ECO action. The ECO action is: Cleaning the shores of the rivers, beach of the lake, parts of the national parks and object with cultural historical meaning for Macedonia (churches, monastery etc.).To come thru most of the work action on more place the volunteers will travel with bicycle and they will sleep in tents where the work action it will be located. TRAVALING: -Bicyclists will travel from Struga then will spending the night in: -Struga –The city of Struga itself is located at the southernmost edge of the Struga valley, which is surrounded from West by the Jablanitsa Mountain, from East by the Mokra Mountain, from North by the Karaorman Mountain and from South by the eternal Lake Ohrid. The mountains are rich with natural beauties, thick oak, beech and pine woods, clear springs and streams, glacier lakes, beautiful picturesque villages and a great number of historical monuments. Lying on the northernmost tip of the lake Ohrid, the city is divided in two halves by the river Black Drim, which flows out of the lake straight through the heart of Struga.–Pestani- The village Pestani is south from the town Ohrid on 12th KM by the beach of Ohrid Lake and on the foot of the national Park Galicica. It is one of the best touristy places, also Pestani is famous place for fishing. By this village are the best beaches what we have by the Ohrid Lake. -Sv.Naum- The monastery of St. Naum is located on the southeast side of Lake Ohrid, in the immediate vicinity of the Macedonian-Albanian border. Its building is linked to the name of St. Naum, the closest associate of St. Clement of Ohrid. Records about the life and work of St. Naum can be found in three literature works dedicated to his life. Also the Archbishop of Ohrid, Constantine Cavassila, wrote about him. In the Historical Archives of Ohrid there is a Chronicle written by a priest that lived in the second half of XIX century. It reveals a series of interesting details about the construction of the monastery, the estate of the church, and the lives of the monks. Among other things, there is a record about a disastrous fire that occurred on the night of 2nd and 3rd February 1875, when the largest part of the monastery compound was burnt to ashes. -Galicica- The National Park Galicica is situated on Mount Galicica, that is a part of the mountain range of Sara-Pind. Due to its exceptional natural beauty and extremely opulent and endemic flora and fauna, in 1958 the Macedonian section of the mountain was proclaimed a National Park. The Park covers an area of 227 km2 between the Lakes of Ohrid and Prespa, and it stretches in a meridian direction. -Ohrid- We would like to draw your attention to one of Macedonia's greatest truths, the truth of Ohrid, an eternal town, a magical hill whose primordial pulsation links ancient and modern times forever because: Ohrid has been a living town for two thousand and four hundred years. It is the legitimate descendant of the shining Lychnidos, a town whose achievements were woven into the tapestry of a powerful ancient civilization; the town of Ohrid is indeed the cultural history of the Republic of Macedonia in miniature. Today Ohrid is a cultural, spiritual and tourist centre. And finally, as the crowning glory of its values, Ohrid and Lake Ohrid have been named a world cultural and natural heritage listed city under the protection of UNESCO since 1980. -Otesevo- The town Otesevo is on southwest part of Macedonia by the second biggest natural lake “Prespansko”. Prespa lake is on east part of the mountain and national park “Galicica”. What is the famous about this lake? Its have one island in the center of the lake. And also is full with historical cultural monuments and else. Interesting is that the “Prespansko Lake” and “Ohridsko Lake” they have connection under the mountain “Galicica” and every day millions liters of water passing to the Ohridsko lake. -Kosel visit- This village is on 10km of town Ohrid. In village Kosel we will visit one part of the long dead but, in a way still active volcano, and how we are entering in Kosel we will feel the smell of the volcanic fumes. This it will be just visit of the place. ACCOMMODATION: Accommodation on the work campers first day is in Struga in Hostel. By Ohrid Lake this Hostel is on 50 meters from the biggest beach in the town of Struga. Next days the campers are leaving from the town of Struga and they will sleep in tents in different places. The campers will get shower on any of the place where the group will be located. The last days of the work camp are planed to be in Struga for the nationality evenings. Because of that it will be good if every one of the group bring some products from their countries for the nationality evening. It will be good if any of the volunteers brings a sleeping bag. LOCATION: Struga is place which two much debased words fit well: it is pretty and charming. Struga is found on the shores of Lake Ohrid, around 14 km away from the beautiful town of Ohrid, and lies at an altitude of 698m above sea level. The city has been known since the time of the Iliri, and a lot of the old writers of travel books (travelogue) have noted that Struga has been a very alive city, with developed trade, big markets, and the houses of the rich Struga’s people have been always beautiful and decorative. That is why since that time, there has been a saying "Kako Struga nemat druga" (Like Struga there is no other). Every Saturday there is a gathering for the weekly market which should not be missed. One is marked in the centre of the town for products of all kinds, while the other in the northern purlieus for livestock. Oddly enough for the kind of provincial town it is, it possesses a very good natural history museum in which the local fauna are particularly well represented. It is created by a Russian refugee who personally collected and mounted everything in it. If you have had any doubts about the existence of bears and wolves in Macedonia, you will see some good looking specimens here, together with herons, pelicans, scorpions, snakes and many more. MAVROVO 7YFEYE I: 15/07-25/07 VOL 12MAVROVO 8YFEYE II: 28/07-07/08 VOL 12MAVROVO 8YFEYE III: 10/08-20/08 VOL 12MAVROVO 8YFEYE IV: 01/09-10/09 VOL 12 Mavrovo is national park in Macedonia. It is on 1500 meter above sea level. This is very popular tourist place in winter as well in summer. There is a very beautiful natural lake here, but the many tourists in high season pollute it. That is why we organize this work camp - to keep this natural treasure untouched as it once was. Through this, the participants will get to know each other, share their experiences and gain new ones, and have a lot of fun. The sky centre is around 1800 meter above see level and it is giving one of the best views ever. WORK: The activities for this work camp are oriented toward making a walking path for the tourists, providing an easier way to the desired destination. There will also be actions for cleaning the shores of the rivers that flow into Mavrovo Lake. This will help the preservation of this lake and the surrounding rivers that flow into it. During all activities the traveling will be with bicycle and the volunteers will go from place to place and clean the area around the lake. LOCATION: Mavrovo is an interesting tourist attraction with unique natural beauties. This tourist centre is believed to be one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Macedonia. It is a place of many natural beauties, magnificent passages, a crystal clear lake, high mountain hills from where you can see panoramas of Bistra and its near by village suburbs. Marvovo attracts tourists during all seasons, but it is more attractive in winter when it is all covered with deep snow.
The Mavrovo region is situated around the lake of Mavrovo from the Mavrovski Anovi, all the way to the village of Mavrovo. Mavrovo and Mavrovi Anovi represent two tourist suburbs, joined together in one tourist region. The whole tourist complex manages with 1200 beds and over 1000 villas, with many hotels, restaurants and shops.
The Mavrovo region hosts ski tournaments and other sport recreations. This region is very active throughout the year. The northern peaks of Rusino Brdo, Sultanica and Sandaktas, have good condition for winter sport activities. The popularity of Mavrovo is growing more and more each year with the attraction of many tourists. ACCOMMODATION: The participants will be accommodated in a rented villa. The villa has fifteen beds, arranged by three in a room, two bathrooms with shower, and a kitchen. The villa is placed on a hill near the lake and has a great view. The traditional evenings will be organized in the back yard of the villa. The villa is fully equipped with TV and DVD so all the participants can bring own music and films from their countries. LEISURE TIME: The participant will have opportunity to seen the famous church in Mavrovo which is into the lake. They will have claming on mountains, traveling along mountain Bistra with bicycle.
